What is falafel?

Technically, falafel is a Middle Eastern dish of spiced, mashed chickpeas formed into balls and deep-fried. Falafel is usually served in a pita and drizzled with tahini-based sauces. Many believe the dish was first introduced in Egypt, but it is now popular throughout the Middle East  and the Mediterranean as a snack or a replacement for meat.
